Hello. I am Angie's mother in law,
Cheryl. She has graciously offered me this space to offer my soaps for
sale.
If you would like an
alternative to commercial soap look here. My hand made soap is created
from only food grade products. The only chemical additives I might add are
fragrance oils.
Would it surprise you to find out that most commercial soap is actually
synthetic detergents? It is easier and cheaper to manufacture than soap
and it contains hydrocarbons. Yes, hydrocarbons come from petroleum, the
same petroleum gasoline and plastics are made from. I use only food grade
oils. The same oils you would use to cook your favorite meals with. Also
all herbs, spices or botanicals I use are of the same quality you would
find in the spice or tea isles of your favorite grocery store. Many are
grown in my own garden, completely organic, pesticide free.
I make my soap using the “cold process” method. This is the most time
consuming method but in my opinion makes the finest quality soap. It takes
a minimum of three weeks to produce soap using this method, some oils
(like olive oil for Castile soap) can take several months to “cure” but
well worth the wait for the soft, emollient rich soap it makes.
Why fragrance oils instead of essential oils? Fragrance oils are
considered artificial, though most are derived from organic bases. Though
I prefer to use natural botanicals to scent my soap I will occasionally
use a fragrance oil to accent (or intensify) a scent that can not be
concentrated sufficiently in soap with out over loading it with the
botanical, lowering the quality of the soap. I use only fragrance oils
thoroughly tested for safety from reliable vendors.
Why not essential oils? Essential oils have been used for hundreds of
years for medicinal purposes and for good reason. Most essential oils are
the bases for many medicines we use today. I am not saying that occasional
use of essential oils is dangerous for most people but as many of the
people I first started making my soap for are people with health problems
and I was concerned that chronic exposure to many essential oils could
potentially interact with the prescribed medications they are taking and
pose a health threat for them. I may offer a line of essential oil soaps
in the future so if that’s what you’re looking for keep checking back.
Note... I have had some people ask me if my soap contains lye. All soap is
made from lye. Soap is the result of Saponification, the chemical
combination of fatty acids with a caustic substance. If all ingredients
are properly balanced there will be no lye left, it has all been
chemically married to the fat. So no, the soap I make contains no lye in
it. It has all been converted into soap. I use food grade sodium
hydroxide, the same lye used to make pretzels with their distinctive
taste. Lye is also used to make Lutefish, hominy, tortillas, many types of
olives, and many other foods.
Yes, compared to the bars of modified hydrocarbons labeled soap at your
local grocery store hand made soap is expensive. But there is an old
saying “you get what you pay for”. I do try to keep costs down by buying
in bulk but I refuse to compromise quality to save a dime. I use this soap
and want it to be it to be the best I can make it.
